Our Work in Haiti

Food means helping provide staple foods, including rice, beans, spaghetti, cooking oil, flour, and other necessities, through trusted local church and community relationships.

Vision means providing testing, eyeglasses, and related supplies to children and adults who struggle with poor vision. For a child who cannot see a classroom page, a parent trying to work, or an elder seeking to remain independent, a pair of eyeglasses can make a meaningful difference in daily life.

Access means helping address practical barriers that affect families and communities. Current planning includes road and infrastructure work near Cap-Haïtien to improve access to partner churches and surrounding communities, while also creating work opportunities for local construction workers.

Church and ministry partnerships

Hope for Haiti has worked alongside Lutheran churches and ministry partners in Haiti for more than two decades. Current relationships named in the ministry’s 2027 grant narrative include the First Evangelical Church of Cap-Haïtien, led by Pastor Elliona Bernard, and the First Evangelical Church of Ouanaminthe, led by Pastor Daniel Paul.

The ministry also works with stateside and Haiti-based organizations to identify needs and coordinate assistance. Current efforts include exploring a breadfruit-tree initiative with the Haiti Lutheran Mission Society and Trees That Feed Foundation. Breadfruit has the potential to support both nutrition and household income for Haitian families.

Hope for Haiti also grows from the outreach and service tradition of Trinity Lutheran Church, whose members have supported local and global service efforts for many years.

A story still being written

Kim and Keith have often said that they never became accustomed to how much they were blessed and inspired by Haitian Christians. Their faith, hope, joy, perseverance, and trust in Jesus Christ have shaped Hope for Haiti from the beginning.

What began as one mission trip in 1999 became a ministry of long-term friendship, shared faith, practical service, and mutual encouragement. Haiti has become much more than a destination to those involved with Hope for Haiti. It has become a place of deep relationships, shared ministry, and family.

Hope for Haiti’s story continues through a pastor who knows the needs of his congregation, a family receiving food during a difficult season, a local worker earning income through a community project, a child seeing the words on a page for the first time, and children gathering for Vacation Bible School to hear that they are loved by Jesus.

We are grateful for every person who has prayed, served, given, traveled, partnered, or shared this work with others. Together, we continue to bring hope to the ground in Haiti through faith, food, access, vision, and enduring relationships.
